Punishments for Sexual Immorality

¹⁰ “If a ^(A)man commits adultery with the wife of^[a] his neighbor, both the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death. ^11 (B)If a man lies with his father's wife, he has uncovered his father's nakedness; both of them shall surely be put to death; their blood is upon them. ^12 (C)If a man lies with his daughter-in-law, both of them shall surely be put to death; they have committed ^(D)perversion; their blood is upon them. ^13 (E)If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall surely be put to death; their blood is upon them. ^14 (F)If a man takes a woman and her mother also, it is depravity; he and they shall be burned with fire, that there may be no depravity among you. ^15 (G)If a man lies with an animal, he shall surely be put to death, and you shall kill the animal. ^16 (H)If a woman approaches any animal and lies with it, you shall kill the woman and the animal; they shall surely be put to death; their blood is upon them.

^17 (I)“If a man takes his sister, a daughter of his father or a daughter of his mother, and sees her nakedness, and she sees his nakedness, it is a disgrace, and they shall be cut off in the sight of the children of their people. He has uncovered his sister's nakedness, and he shall bear his iniquity. ^18 (J)If a man lies with a woman during her menstrual period and uncovers her nakedness, he has made naked her fountain, and she has uncovered the fountain of her blood. Both of them shall be cut off from among their people. ^19 (K)You shall not uncover the nakedness of your mother's sister or of your father's sister, for that is to make naked ^(L)one's relative; they shall bear their iniquity. ^20 (M)If a man lies with his uncle's wife, he has uncovered his uncle's nakedness; they shall bear their sin; they shall die childless. ^21 (N)If a man takes his brother's wife, it is impurity.^[b] He has uncovered his brother's nakedness; they shall be childless.

You Shall Be Holy

^22 (O)“You shall therefore keep all my statutes and all my rules and do them, that the land where I am bringing you to live may not ^(P)vomit you out. ^23 (Q)And you shall not walk in the customs of the nation that I am driving out before you, for they did all these things, and therefore I detested them. ²⁴ But ^(R)I have said to you, ‘You shall inherit their land, and I will give it to you to possess, a land ^(S)flowing with milk and honey.’ I am the Lord your God, ^(T)who has separated you from the peoples. ^25 (U)You shall therefore separate the clean beast from the unclean, and the unclean bird from the clean. You shall not make yourselves detestable by beast or by bird or by anything with which the ground crawls, which I have set apart for you to hold unclean. ^26 (V)You shall be holy to me, ^(W)for I the Lord am holy and have separated you from the peoples, that you should be mine.

^27 (X)“A man or a woman who is a medium or a necromancer shall surely be put to death. They shall be ^(Y)stoned with stones; ^(Z)their blood shall be upon them.”

8 ¹ but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. ^2 (A)Early in the morning he came again to the temple. All the people came to him, and ^(B)he sat down and taught them. ³ The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery, and placing her in the midst ⁴ they said to him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery. ⁵ Now ^(C)in the Law, Moses commanded us ^(D)to stone such women. So what do you say?” ⁶ This they said ^(E)to test him, ^(F)that they might have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground. ⁷ And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, ^(G)“Let him who is without sin among you ^(H)be the first to throw a stone at her.” ⁸ And once more he bent down and wrote on the ground. ⁹ But when they heard it, they went away one by one, beginning with the older ones, and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him. ¹⁰ Jesus stood up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” ¹¹ She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, ^(I)“Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on ^(J)sin no more.”]]

^24 (A)“Do not make yourselves unclean by any of these things, ^(B)for by all these the nations I am driving out before you have become unclean, ²⁵ and the ^(C)land became unclean, so that I punished its iniquity, and the land ^(D)vomited out its inhabitants.

Laws Concerning Witnesses

¹⁵ “A single witness shall not suffice against a person for any crime or for any wrong in connection with any offense that he has committed. ^(A)Only on the evidence of two witnesses or of three witnesses shall a charge be established. ¹⁶ If ^(B)a malicious witness arises to accuse a person of wrongdoing, ¹⁷ then both parties to the dispute shall appear before the Lord, ^(C)before the priests and the judges who are in office in those days. ¹⁸ The judges shall ^(D)inquire diligently, and if the witness is a false witness and has accused his brother falsely, ^19 (E)then you shall do to him as he had meant to do to his brother. So you shall purge the evil^[a] from your midst. ²⁰ And the rest ^(F)shall hear and fear, and shall never again commit any such evil among you.
